Practitioners concerned with Identity: 19/02/24
a practitioner is a person who is actively engaged in art, discipline, or profession.
identity is a very complex and deceptive aspect of humans. Having an identity gives people a sense of belonging which is important to well-being and confidence.
Exploring identity through Photography - the relationship between photography and social identity goes back to the invention of the camera itself, yet it didn't take long for the idea of ''identity'' to be quickly recognized as something that could be manufactured in front of the camera as easy as it may be discovered by it. contemporary image-maker works have now become instrumental by not only reconstructing and questioning canons of identity but also an important part in raising awareness around political realities concerning the fight for identity rights. a good example of a person using photography to explore identity was Adjoa Armah as she founded Saman in 2015 which is an archive of photographic negatives collected across Ghana that currently number approximately 100,000 images. here research interests are broadly in technologies, as efficacious actions on subjects and objects, and black ontologies.
Exploring Identity through Film - Joker is a great example of a film that focuses on society's effect on a person's identity. although it's based around the famous comic book character the overall story is grounded and very haunting. the film follows the character of Arthur Fleck, a mentally disturbed comedian, who is mistreated and ignored by society afterward he goes on a negative spiral of violence as he achieves inner peace when he adopts the persona of the Joker. the film has great pacing and a very intriguing storyline and in addition, Joaquin Phoenix is the main highlight of the film as he brings such realism and nuance. Director Todd Phillips perfectly captures that feeling of being an outcast while also having social anxiety and how someone tries so hard to make an image for themselves.
Film is a valuable tool for presenting identity, especially for young people whose identities are still being formed and shaped and so films can act as windows into the wider world, and offer context and points of view that they might otherwise not know about. films can influence people and teach them great lessons about life and also can let people experience a fun time with characters who can relate to anyone.
Exploring identity through Artists - people change their identity through the types of clothes they wear its important to know that artists adopt and explore new identities from positions of privilege freely expressing themselves in new ways. artists like Gillian Wearing and Cindy Sherman also use portraits and self-portraits to explore identity but instead of documenting their own looks, they take on other people's looks.
Gillian Wearing is best known for exploring themes of identity, surveillance, and the divide between private and public life.

having thought about it as an idea i want to create a website and a poster for my final major project as i believe it will be easy and creative to make. this mind map is going to be primary research.

here is a mock-up of what a survey of questions related to my project will be like. most of the questions are about what people like and what would they do with a project relating to identity. I have made this so that I have it ready for when I actually create my project so that I can receive feedback on it for primary research.
